CHILD TAX CREDIT

The state of Louisiana saw significant reduction in poverty as a result of the largest, national pilot in the Child Tax Credit that was implemented as a result of the Covid Pandemic.

This program provided tax credit for eligible taxpayers with qualifying children in the form of cash payouts. The credit amount varied based on factors like the number of qualifying children and the taxpayer’s income. It can lower tax liability or result in a tax refund.

During the course of this pilot, it has been proven to reduce poverty for families with dependent children – in every state.

Aimee

Aimee is a single mother of two children and works at a pediatric clinic. Aimee has said the guaranteed income program has been a lifeline for her household. It has lessened the stress around the rising costs of utilities, groceries, and ability to transport herself to work and her children to school and appointments.

“This program has been awesome for me and it’s necessary. When life happens, and it’s out of your control, this program has been the cushion needed in those unforeseen times. This program allowed me to be able to weather the 100+ temps to pay the very high energy bills, afford gas to take care of daily needs and feed my family.”

Lakendra is a single mother of three school age children. She said the guaranteed income program has made the biggest difference in how she shows up for her children. The “troubling times” she’s endured prior to the program have been alleviated by her ability to gain reliable transportation and the assurance each month that she can reliably get where she needs to go.

“This pilot program is amazing, it helped me in the trying times I have had. Not only has it helped me during the aftermath of the pandemic crisis but it has also helped me to get reliable, safe transportation for me and my three children. I’m now better able to attend their school events, drive us to doctor appointments and get to work.”

Renodia

Renodia is a single mother of a three-year-old and aspiring college student who has used the funds in part to pay off debts and increase her financial literacy. She says the Shreveport Guaranteed Income program has assisted her with providing assistance to her daughter, catching up on her mortgage payments, and providing a path for her to pursue a college degree.

“When, I first heard of this program an just the thoughts of how it will impact our lives it gave a sense of joy, stability, courage, and feeling free of “KNOWING” that it will be there for my 3 year old and I. Living as a single parent it has been a tremendous help to help free up my path by paying bills off to get closer to my goals of raising my credit to a 700. It has helped me get through the struggles of price increases on everything and catching up with my mortgage. Showing up for my family and friends when I had to always tell them that it does not fit in my budget. I am now able to catch up on some well needed self-help for myself now that some of the burden has been lifted off my shoulders mentally. I will have the courage to go back to school and receive my bachelors degree. Thanks to all that is apart, we appreciate you!!”
